State Treasurer Kate Marshall and the Board of Trustees of the College Savings Plans of ÇéÉ«ÎåÔÂÌì (Board) announced Tuesday, Sept. 16, the northern ÇéÉ«ÎåÔÂÌì recipient of the 2014 Kenny C. Guinn Memorial Scholarship during an event at the ÇéÉ«ÎåÔÂÌì, Reno. This year's recipient is University senior Devan Gaddis who is majoring in elementary education. Guinn family members and University President Marc Johnson were also in attendance.

"The Kenny C. Guinn Memorial Millennium Scholarship continues to be a symbol of the love Kenny had for ÇéÉ«ÎåÔÂÌì and for education," Former First Lady Dema Guinn said. "His life was so deeply impacted by education. Kenny always wanted to share with ÇéÉ«ÎåÔÂÌì students his enthusiasm for learning and to impart the important role it played in his professional and personal development. I know Kenny would be deeply honored and proud of the recipients' achievements."

Gaddis is working toward a degree with emphasis on special education, is a Golden Key and Phi Kappa Phi member, and has been on the Dean’s List since the 2011 spring semester. She plans to stay in Reno and teach middle school math. 

Since it was enacted in 1999, 85,000 ÇéÉ«ÎåÔÂÌì high school students have benefited from the Gov. Guinn Millennium Scholarship, of which 25,000 students have attended the ÇéÉ«ÎåÔÂÌì, Reno. In 2011, the ÇéÉ«ÎåÔÂÌì Legislature unanimously approved and Governor Sandoval signed into law Senate Bill 220, establishing the Kenny C. Guinn Memorial Millennium Scholarship. The trust fund is used to bestow additional scholarships each year to two qualified Gov. Guinn Millennium Scholars, one each in northern and southern ÇéÉ«ÎåÔÂÌì, who are majoring in elementary or secondary education with the intent of teaching in ÇéÉ«ÎåÔÂÌì. Each recipient receives up to $4,500 to supplement that student's current GGMS award.

To date, more than $200,000 has been donated in memory of Gov. Guinn, who originated the concept of the Millennium Scholarship program, which was renamed in his honor by the State Legislature in 2005.
