Mechanical Engineering Highlights

  • Mechanical Engineering Assistant Professor Jun Zhang is working on a new type of soft, flexible “muscle” for robots, called a coiled string actuator. The National Science Foundation is supporting this work with a $300,000, three-year grant. The project,  could help create more advanced and compact robots that move more like living things.
  • Mechanical Engineering Assistant Professor Floris van Breugel is one of the principal investigators in a research project that could ultimately lead to new ways to treat brain problems such as Tourette’s syndrome and Parkinson’s disease. The National Institutes of Health is supporting this work with a $1.2 million grant awarded in 2024. The project,  is headed by California Institute of Technology Professor Michael Dickinson. University of Washington Professor Bingni Wen Brunton also is a principal investigator on the project.
